2013 Fall Research Conference Next Steps: The Program Selection Process is Complete

July 3, 2013 08:11 AM

Four months and counting to the 2013 Fall Research Conference! We completed the extremely difficult task of choosing among extremely high quality proposals to construct a fall conference program that promises an intellectually stimulating and challenging three days. The work to develop the program was bittersweet. While final sessions for the conference will be extraordinary, there also were proposals we had to reject due to space constraints. This was an extremely difficult task. In making these difficult decisions we considered the following factors:

  • The ability to construct cogent sessions from individual paper submissions.
  • The importance of offering diversity of perspectives from a variety of organizations, agencies, universities, and disciplines.
  • The desire to achieve a relatively fair and equitable distribution of sessions across the ten issue areas.
  • The challenge to offer conference attendants emerging perspectives and research within the ten issue areas.
  • The attempt to reduce redundancy and duplication within and across issue areas.
  • The need to honor APPAM's strategic goals of (1) offering more "cross cutting," multi-perspective sessions and (2) actively seeking participation of policy makers and practitioners.
  •  The need to accommodate common themes across the ten issue areas; this year's research on the implications of the Great Recession emerged as a strong theme across issue areas.

Fortunately this will be the last year space will play a major role in constraining our choices of conference offerings.

The preliminary program will be out sometime after July 15. Take a look and start thinking about making arrangements to join us. We still have a few surprises in store for you!
