What Interventions Work Best for Families Who Experience Homelessness? Impact Estimates from the Family Options Study | JPAM Featured Article

In the United States, families with children represent about one-third of the 1.4 million people who experience sheltered homelessness each year. This paper presents findings from the Family Options Study, the first large-scale randomized trial to investigate the effects of interventions for families who experience homelessness. The study compares priority access to three types of programs with assignment to a usual care group that did not receive priority access to any type of program.

2012 APPAM Fall Research Conference

The APPAM Fall Research Conference will be held November 8-10 at the Sheraton Baltimore City Center and Radisson Plaza Lord Baltimore Hotels in Baltimore, MD.
The theme of the conference is Policy Analysis and Public Management in an Age of Scarcity: The Challenges of Assessing Effectiveness and Efficiency.

Register now to receive the best rates. Early registration pricing is available through September 30. Student members can register for $100; non-members can register for $135, which includes one year of membership. In order to receive the student member pricing, your membership must be current. If necessary, please renew your membership before registering for the conference to ensure you receive the best rate.
In order to receive the student non-member pricing you need to join as a member ($35) and then register for the conference and you will receive the discounted $100 rate.
At the time of registration you will also be able to purchase a ticket for the Awards Luncheon and Membership Meeting ($25). These tickets are limited and going fast so please purchase them in advance if you wish toa ttend.
Conference participants must register by September 30.

New Student Events at the Fall Research Conference

Bright Futures Breakfast

For the first time ever, APPAM will host the Bright Futures Breakfast on Friday, November 9, 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. in the Hall of Fame Lounge at the Sheraton Hotel. This event will offer students the opportunity to enjoy a light breakfast while networking with hiring managers and recruiters to learn more about what they seek in job candidates, in a relaxed, casual atmosphere.

Student and Senior Scholar Roundtable and Networking Reception

Although the Student and Senior Scholar Receptions have been a part of APPAM for the last few years, this year will showcase a new format. Held Friday, November 9, 8:30 to 10:00 p.m. in the International E room at the Sheraton Hotel, this event will start with a lively roundtable. This roundtable will be composed of senior scholars, practioners and recent graduates who have successfully transitioned into the professional world. The panel will discuss the challenges and opportunities that confront students going through this transition period and offer suggestions for success. There will be time for questions at the end before the networking reception begins in the same space.

Student Volunteers Needed for the Fall Conference

APPAM is seeking student volunteers for the 2012 Fall Research Conference. All student volunteers will be assigned a 4-5 hour shift which could include duties such as taking head counts in sessions to determine attendance, handing out badges at the registration check in or other basic tasks as needed. All student volunteers receive free registration for the conference in exchange for their service. In mid-September, APPAM will be debuting a new look to its website, The new site will feature a wealth of public policy and association news, a revamped look and feel, and social media integration.
