APPAM Taking Nominations for 2015 Policy Council, Committees

Have you ever considered being more involved in APPAM? One of the most rewarding avenues of service within the Association is through the Policy Council. “APPAM benefits greatly from the time and energy that members of the Policy Council invest in the Association,” says APPAM President Angela Evans. “They undertake work that ensures the Association continues to offer its members—and the policy community writ large—programs and services that enhance policy research and its implementation.” With fall right around the corner, it’s time to consider if you can contribute to the leadership and direction of APPAM.
Currently, the Association is taking nominations for the next Policy Council cohort elections and for three open leadership positions. You can self-nominate or put forward the name of a member peer whom you feel would be an excellent leadership candidate. The deadline for nominations is Monday, August 11, so there’s little time to waste. Nominations should be sent to APPAM Executive Director Tara Sheehanas soon as possible.
"APPAM is only able to accomplish all we're able to do through the diligent work of our volunteer board," says Sheehan. "While a lot is expected from members who serve on the Policy Council, it is often reported that service on the Board is a very rewarding experience, both professionally and personally."
APPAM is looking for candidates for three open positions: a self-identified practitioner, an academic, and an early career academic—someone within 10 years of receipt of their terminal degree. These required positions were put in place after a governance structure change to the Council in 2013. APPAM is also looking for candidates for the leadership positions of President-Elect, Vice President and Treasurer.
Once all the names are compiled, they are submitted to the Nominating Committee to review for consideration. The complete list of candidates will be presented to the membership at the APPAM Business Meeting and Awards Lunch during the Fall Research Conferencein Albuquerque, New Mexico. Voting will take place electronically after the conference and the new council members will be announced to the Association in January 2015. The new Policy Council members will serve for four years; the new President-Elect, Vice President, and Treasure will serve for two years.
What if you’re looking for a smaller role in the Association’s leadership? Consider volunteering to serve on one of several open committees. The goals of these committees are to help Policy Council members further connect with the Association and are accountable for specific tasks, programs, and areas. Committee members often step up into larger Policy Council roles after their term, often finding they wish to broaden their role within the organization.
While the standing President appoints members of the Policy Council to committees, there are a few slots opened to the general membership. If you would like to serve on a committee next year, simply notify the Executive Director or the President-Elect of your interest before January 2015.
APPAM encourages all of its members to consider serving with the Association in some manner, as the rewards can be boundless. “I have made many strong and lasting friendships among the wonderful persons with whom I have served,” says Evans. “The Policy Council is the backbone of APPAM’s governance and I am hopeful our members will consider running for a position on the Council or volunteer some of their time to serve on a committee.”
