APPAM's Fall Research Conference Has Events Geared Towards Students

Whether you're an undergraduate or postgraduate student in the public policy field of study, there is a lot to occupy your attention. One event you should give serious consideration to attending is APPAM's Fall Research Conference; this year's event is being held in Washington, DC from November 7 to 9, with a few special events on November 6 that are designed with students in mind.
Pre-conference Doctoral Workshop
Noon – 6:00 pm Wednesday, November 6
Taking place the afternoon before the conference, this workshop is for doctoral students in public policy and public administration in all stages of training. There will be three panel discussions and a mentoring session, covering topics such as finding jobs, getting published, and accessing grants and fellowships. Please note that there is a separate registration process for this event.
Doctoral Drinks and Dinner Mixer
6:30 – 8:30 pm, Wednesday, November 6
This is an off-site event being organized by students as an additional informal networking opportunity and is not hosted by APPAM. More information will be posted on APPAM.org closer to the Fall Conference.
New Member Reception (Invitation Only)
6:00 – 7:30 pm, Wednesday, November 6
New professional members and first time conference attendees will mingle and enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres during this informal networking event. Meet the APPAM Policy Council and Association officers, learn more about APPAM activities, and how to make the most of your time at the conference. Invitations will be sent out to new members and first-time attendees in a few weeks.
Welcome Reception at the House of Sweden
6:30 – 8:30 pm, Thursday, November 7
Join other conference attendees and enjoy a stunning view of the Potomac River during this kickoff event. Network with members over cocktails and hors d’oeuvres at the House of Sweden, a modern glass event space run by the Embassy of Sweden. Transportation will be provided from the Washington Marriott.
Bright Futures Breakfast
8:00 – 9:30 am, Friday, November 8
Students and recent graduates are invited to attend a buffet breakfast and a networking opportunity with other students, young professionals, recruiters, hiring managers, and experienced professionals.
Student and Senior Scholar Roundtable and Reception
8:30 – 10:00 pm, Friday, November 8
Students and recent graduates are encouraged to attend the annual APPAM Student/Senior Scholar Reception. The reception will begin with an informal roundtable featuring practitioners, academics, recent graduates, and government employees. They will share their expertise on topics of interest to students and recent graduates as they transition from academic study to career building. After the roundtable, attendees are invited to mingle and enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in the same space.

Saturday Member Caucus
8:00 – 9:30 am, Saturday, November 9
A dedicated time for informal discussion, attendees have the chance to sit with other colleagues and discuss new and emerging policy issues and formulate new research questions.
Thursday and Friday, November 7 and 8
Build a profile and place your resume on PublicServiceCareers.org, where you can indicate your attendance to the conference by registering for the career fair. This does not guarantee an interview, but employers will be made aware of your skills and experience, and may take the opportunity during the conference to conduct an interview.
