World Citizen Prizes in Environmental Performance

Beginning with our 2019 conference in Denver, APPAM awards the World Citizen Prizes in Environmental Performance at the Annual Fall Research Conference. Granted by David and Joy K. Peyton, the award recognizes research that assesses pathways to achieve measurable but as-yet unrealized gains in overall environmental performance, in particular to reduce consumption and waste.  The research may be based on the United States or any other country or countries.

 

 

Eligibility

Award recipients are selected by a diverse review committee based on nominations submitted to the APPAM office. They should include the researcher's CV, a letter detailing why the researcher is applying for the award, and copies of links to up to 3 recent research products that highlight contributions by the nominee or joint nominees to environmental policy, and a recommendation letter from someone familiar with the research. Recipients must meet the following requirements:

• The work should recognize research that assesses pathways to achieve measurable but as-yet unrealized gains in overall environmental performance, in particular to reduce consumption, waste, and climate change
   
• The work may be published research, a Master thesis, or a Ph.D. dissertation as long as it was created within the last two calendar years of the award calendar year. For instance, the November 2023 award will accept work from as early as 2021.

The award winner will each receive the following at the APPAM Annual Fall Research Conference in November 2023.

• A $2,500 prize in the form of a check made out to the winner.
• Up to $500 in travel funds supporting attendance at the APPAM Annual Fall Research Conference.
• A plaque with the award title, description, their name, and the year.
• Recognition at an awards event at the conference.

Douglas Noonan

Matisoff and Noonan are being recognized for their research presented in their recent co-authored book, Ecolabels, Innovation, and Green Market Transofrmation. The book was published by Cambridge University Press in 2022 and provides a new perspective on leveraging markets to transform industry. According to one of their reccommenders, their book "details a theory of Green Market Transformation as told through the lens of ecolabeling and green building and illustrated by insightful case studies from across the globe."

 

Lucy Qiu
School of Public Policy
University of Marlyand

Qiu is being recognized for her research in analyzing consumer behaviors in response to low carbon technologies and the importance of low-carbon technologies in addressing climate change. These papers include: Empirical grid impact of in-home electric vehicle charging differs from predictions, The weather affects air conditioner purches to fill the energy efficiency gap, and Effects of expanding electric vehicle charging stations in California on the housing market.
