APPAM Launches COVID-19 Member Resources, Data and Research Collaboration Hub

As many professional organizations around the globe explore ways that they can contribute to addressing the current public health crisis, APPAM would like to provide members with a platform for interacting and sharing ideas focused around the COVID-19 topic. To that end, we are launching a Resources, Data, and Research Collaboration Hub.

Check Out the Great Events at the Fall Research Conference for Students

August 27, 2014 09:30 AM

As classes get underway for the fall, students recognize there is a lot vying for their attention. One of the most important activities students need to keep in mind in today's policy landscape is that of networking. With today's highly competitive job market, networking in the right circles often opens doors and can provide a much-needed boost to your career.

APPAM provides policy students—from undergraduate to postdoctoral—the biggest opportunity to network with its annual Fall Research Conference. This year, the conference is in the picturesque western town of Albuquerque, New Mexico. We have scheduled several sessions and events with students in mind, and all of them provide excellent networking opportunities. For example, consider attending the conference's opening reception on Thursday, November 6. Held at the Albuquerque Museum of Art and History, the reception invites all attendees to network in a more relaxed setting. We encourage you to introduce yourself to the varied members of the Association; you may find your next mentor, research partner, or future employer through the connections and relationships you form at the event.

If you're a student nearing the end of their term and looking into future employment, you may want to consider coming to Albuquerque a day early and attending our special Professional Development Workshop, Beyond the Degree: Bringing Career Options into Focus. This afternoon series of panels is designed by students for students, featuring sessions that bring faculty and policymakers together to speak on three major career avenues of importance to students: the career search, tenured faculty and the fellowships, and the non-academic pathway.

"I really recommend this year's pre-conference workshop to anyone who just recently graduated, is searching the job market this year, or plans to enter the job market next year," says APPAM Policy Council Student Representative Sarah Cordes. "The information last year about publishing, funding applications, and job searching is something that proved very helpful to me as I was applying for fellowships. I'm still finding it influential as I enter the job market this year."

The workshop and reception aren't the only student events being presented, either. Student attendees are encouraged to join in these other great activities and events:

APPAM/NASPAA Joint Reception at the Albuquerque Balloon Museum

Wednesday, November 5, 6:00 – 8:00 pm

Both NASPAA and APPAM's annual conferences are co-located in Albuquerque this year. Attendees from both conferences are welcome to attend several joint sessions on Wednesday and Thursday, November 5 and 6. Of particular interest for students, however, is the joint reception on Wednesday evening, located at the nearby Albuquerque Balloon Museum. The museum features several exhibits on the history of air ballooning and guests can enjoy expansive views of the Sandia Mountains from tethered hot air balloon rides.

Employment Interviews

Thursday and Friday, November 6 and 7

Ready to test the job market? Build a profile and place your resume on, where you can indicate your attendance at the conference. This does not guarantee you an interview, but employers will be made aware of your skills and experience, and may take the opportunity during the conference to conduct an interview.
