Getting Ready for the 2012 Fall Research Conference

September 21, 2012 01:43 PM

(If you are a presenter at this year's conference, your registration deadline is September 30, 2012.)

Wondering if this year's Fall Research Conference is for you?

For many years, the private sector has operated under the mantra of "do more with less." Companies have responded to competitive pressures and a challenging global economy by trying to wring greater productivity out of scarce resources. Now the public sector has moved into an era with severely constrained budgets and even a broader economic recovery is unlikely to fully resolve this predicament. Across the globe, the key questions have evolved from whether cuts will be made to which programs to cut, how much to cut, and when the cuts will begin.

This new age of scarcity in public resources is the backdrop which APPAM members will contribute to the public policy process in 2012 and beyond. More than 250 sessions, symposia, and posters presented at this year's Fall Research Conference offer up a myriad of opportunities and directions for attendees to consider.

In addition to examining the evolving needs of the policy community and exploring new networking pathways, attendees will discover opportunities for employment, fellowships, and collaboration with peers in compatible areas of interest. All of this occurs in downtown Baltimore, Maryland, minutes from the city's scenic and historic Inner Harbor. The Fall Research Conference will also feature lectures by the David N. Kershaw and Peter H. Rossi Award winners.

This year will see the sixth annual special student/senior scholar networking reception. For the first time, the reception will feature casual roundtable discussions by policy leaders on the transition from student into the workforce. Attendees will also have a chance to network with senior academics, employers, and young professionals throughout the evening.

New for the Fall Research Conference is the APPAM Membership Meeting and Awards Lunch. Attendees can purchase a ticket to join the luncheon or may opt to attend just the membership meeting portion (which is free to attendees). At this special event, members will elect the leadership to the Policy Council, see the presentation of some prestigious APPAM awards, and discuss the "State of the Association."

There is a lot happening during the course of the 2012 Fall Research Conference and APPAM members shouldn't miss a minute! You can peruse the general conference schedule or examine the list of sessions presented for more information. And if you have any further questions, don't hesitate to contact us.
