Helpful Info for New Attendees of #2015APPAM
We hope you’re looking forward to your first APPAM Fall Research Conference. We’re excited to have you join us! Since this may be your first APPAM conference or you are a new APPAM member, we wanted to share some information with you so you can make the most of your experience with APPAM.
The 2015 APPAM Fall Research Conference is the 37th of its kind for the organization. The attendance at the conference has grown steadily over the years and we expect to have nearly 2,000 attendees this year. Of these attendees, 40% affiliate themselves with an academic organization, 30% are practitioners or researchers, and 30% are public policy or administration students. The conference includes sessions from 14 policy areas with the largest being education, health, and public and non-profit management and finance. All sessions in the program have a specific area noted in their description and there is also a Session by Policy Area listing at the beginning of the program.
The attire for the conference is business casual for all events. We also suggest bringing a sweater for the session rooms.
Registration and Check-In
All attendees are asked to pick up a badge and review materials at the Registration Area before any sessions begin. The Registration Area will be located in the Riverfront Lobby in the James L. Knight Center which is connected through the lobby of the Hyatt Regency Miami. There you can also pick up a conference program which includes details on all sessions at the conference, maps and other events that might be of interest. Please note that all conference events will take place in the Hyatt Regency Miami and the James L.Knight Center, which are connected.
Additionally, if you have any questions while at the conference, there will be an information desk at registration as well so someone will always be on hand to assist you.
Wednesday – 3:00 – 5:00 pm
Thursday – 8:00 am – 4:30 pm
Friday – 7:00 am – 4:30 pm
Saturday – 7:00 am – 12:00 pm
Sessions and Programs
There are 284 panels and roundtables being presented at this year’s conference. To help attendees find what they’re looking for, we have a Final Program which is the printed program onsite that contains all session information, maps, schedule-at-a-glance, and general conference information. In addition, we also have a conference mobile app with much of the same information. The app does not need to be connected to the internet to work and will allow you to build your own schedule within the conference. Finally, we also have an online program that is completely searchable as well. Whichever way you choose to navigate the conference, there’s a program that will suit your needs!

New Member and First Time Attendee Reception
Join us for cocktails on Wednesday evening from 5:30 – 7:30 pm in the Exhibit Hall to get to know other new members and first time attendees and meet the APPAM Policy Council. This is a great opportunity to network and learn more about APPAM activities and how to make the most of your first time at the Fall Conference. Please RSVP here for the reception by October 31st.
Meals and Refreshments
The registration fee includes several meals and refreshments throughout the event. Additionally, coffee and tea will be available all day, every day in the Exhibit Hall. There will also be daily afternoon snacks in the Exhibit Hall. Here’s a list of where you can find your next bite to eat:
Thursday – Continental breakfast served in the Exhibit Hall beginning at 8:00 am
Friday – Spencer Award Breakfast in Jasmine/Hibiscus Room beginning at 7:00 am. (registration for this event is now closed)
Saturday – Continental breakfast served during the Caucus sessions in the Exhibit Hall beginning at 7:15 am
Thursday – Buffet lunch will be served during the Lunch Symposium in Jasmine/Hibiscus at 12:00 pm. (registration for this event is now closed)
Friday – Lunch not provided unless a ticket was purchased for the Membership & Awards Luncheon which begins at 12:00 pm. Tickets may be purchased for $32 onsite at the Registration Desk or by contacting Meghan Grenda at email@example.com before the conference.
Saturday – Boxed lunch will be served in the Exhibit Hall during the Poster Session & Luncheon. All attendees must visit at least one poster presentation to receive a lunch ticket.
All receptions include cocktails and hors d'oeuvres for all attendees.
Wednesday – New Member and First Time Attendee Reception from 5:30 – 7:30 pm in the Exhibit Hall
Thursday – Welcome Reception from 6:45 – 8:30 pm in the Upper/Lower Promenade
Friday – Presidential Reception from 6:15 – 7:45 pm in Jasmine/Hibiscus
Any meals not noted above, will be on your own. You can find several dining options on the APPAM app or through the hotel concierge.
Last Session Lottery
While we understand it’s tempting to fly back home before the conference’s end to see your family and friends for the weekend, we like to incentivize our attendees by offering complimentary conference registrations during the last sessions on Saturday. In each session, a signup sheet will be passed around. After the conference, one person from each sheet will be selected to win a complimentary registration to the 2016 Fall Research Conference in Washington, D.C.
