Humphrey School Announces New President Bill Clinton Scholarship for Diversity and Inclusion

September 30, 2014 09:00 AM

The Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota announced last week the creation of a special President Bill Clinton Scholarship for Diversity and Inclusion, in honor of President Clinton’s June 9, 2014, visit to the University of Minnesota.
Clinton, the 42nd President of the United States, visited the University of Minnesota to accept the Humphrey School Dean’s Award for Public Leadership and offer reflections on civil rights on the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
The new scholarship fund, which will provide full tuition support for two graduate students throughout their tenure at the Humphrey School, was made possible through the generosity of the President, who collaborated with the Humphrey School to direct the proceeds from his visit toward support for students.

Commenting on the Fund, President Clinton said, “Hubert Humphrey was a hero of mine, and it was a joy for me to join the Humphrey School in celebrating the 1964 Civil Rights Act and Humphrey’s critical role in securing its passage. I am delighted that my visit will also result in support for students seeking to promote the common good in a diverse world.”
In particular, some $80,000 in funds will be used in the School’s next admissions cycle for students entering in the fall of 2015 into one of the School’s five full-time master’s degree programs. Preference will be given to students whose participation in the Humphrey program will enhance the School’s objectives of promoting diversity and inclusion within the School, within the fields of public service and public affairs, or in formulating and implementing public policy at the local, state, or national levels.
The award will support two tuition scholarships for two entering students for both years of study, and as well as research assistantships for the students.
Eric Schwartz, dean of the Humphrey School, commented that “President Clinton’s speech at the University was a heartfelt tribute to the principles reflected in the Civil Rights Act, and was such a meaningful culmination of our one-year commemoration of that critical piece of legislation. We are honored to establish this important scholarship.”
