What Interventions Work Best for Families Who Experience Homelessness? Impact Estimates from the Family Options Study | JPAM Featured Article

In the United States, families with children represent about one-third of the 1.4 million people who experience sheltered homelessness each year. This paper presents findings from the Family Options Study, the first large-scale randomized trial to investigate the effects of interventions for families who experience homelessness. The study compares priority access to three types of programs with assignment to a usual care group that did not receive priority access to any type of program.

Know Before You Go to the 2013 APPAM Fall Research Conference

October 25, 2013 01:00 PM

The Association’s 35th annual Fall Research Conference is just around the corner. Attendees will be arriving in Washington, DC from locations all around the world, ready to learn about the latest in research across 10 broad policy areas. Several special events, symposia, and networking opportunities round out these intensely packed three days, giving attendees many choices to round out their conference experience.

To make the most of your conference experience, here are some last-minute tips to make your trip a lot smoother:

  • Registration will be open on Wednesday 2:00 – 6:00 p.m.; Thursday and Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; and Saturday, 7:30 a.m. – 2:45 p.m. The registration area is located in the Washington Marriott Foyer.
  • The APPAM Fall Research Conference mobile app is available to all attendees. Whether you use a smartphone, tablet, or laptop, this handy application can help you keep track of your schedule, network with fellow attendees both near and far, find presenters and papers at a touch, and utilize social media to enhance your experience. Find the app in your device’s app store or download it.
  • Internet and wifi access is available only in the public lobby areas of the hotels. There is no wifi access in any of the meeting rooms.
  • Consider bringing a coat or sweater with you, as the weather is projected to be in the 60s during the conference. Also, meeting rooms may vary in temperature.
  • If you’re planning on attending the Spencer Lecture and Breakfast on Thursday morning and have already registered, you can pick up your registration materials and breakfast ticket at the Ritz Carlton outside of Salon III A&B beginning at 7:30 a.m. All other attendees can pick up their registration packets in the Marriott Foyer.
  • There are a few tickets still remaining for the Thursday Luncheon with Lee Hamilton. If you forgot to purchase your tickets, you can request them through Friday, November 1 by contacting Ryan Martz. If you’ve not registered yet, you can add the tickets when you register.
  • If you’re a first-time member or attendee to the conference, don’t forget about the special New Member Reception. We invite new professional members and first time conference attendees to join us for this inaugural event. Join the APPAM Policy Council for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres while getting to know other new members and first time attendees. This is a great opportunity to network and learn more about APPAM activities and how to make the most of your first time at the Fall Conference. If you haven’t received an invitation and you’re a first-time attendee or new member, please contact Jocelyn Mason.

And if you’re a participant this year, here are two key things to remember:

  • New guidelines for session chairs, discussants, participants, and posters have been introduced for this year. APPAM doesn’t supply laptops so if you’re in need of one, you must bring your own or coordinate with other presenters in your panel. Don't forget your power cord!
  • If you’re presenting and want attendees to have access to handouts, Power Point presentations, or other documents, APPAM can upload them to the conference mobile app for attendees to peruse at their leisure. Email Ben Rome for more information on how to get your materials online.

Remember, this year’s conference is spread across three nearby hotels: the Washington Marriott, the Westin Georgetown, and the Ritz Carlton. Hotel addresses and a quick reference map can be found below, downloaded online, at the registration booth, and through the mobile app.
