JPAM Featured Article: "Supplying Disadvantaged Schools with Effective Teachers: Experimental Evidence on Secondary Math Teachers from Teach For America"

As part of our ongoing effort to promote JPAM authors to the APPAM membership and the public policy world at large, we are asking JPAM authors to answer a few questions to promote their research article on the APPAM website.


Know Before You Go to the 2014 APPAM Fall Research Conference

The Association’s 36th annual Fall Research Conference is in Albuquerque, New Mexico and attendees from locations all around the world will be arriving to learn about the latest in research. Several special events, symposia, and networking opportunities round out these intensely packed three days.

To make the most of your conference experience, here are some last-minute tips to make your trip a lot smoother:

  • Registration will be open on Wednesday 3:00 – 5:00 pm; Thursday and Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm; and Saturday, 8:00 am – noon. The registration area is located in the Albuquerque Convention Center in the Lower Level Foyer.
  • APPAM is once again offering a conference mobile app to everyone. (Note that if you used the app last year, this is NOT an update but a separate application.) Find the app in your device’s app store or download it.
  • Wi-Fi access is available in the public lobby areas of the Hyatt Regency and the Convention Center. While there is no Wi-Fi access in any of the meeting rooms, attendees can visit the APPAM Central booth in the Exhibit Hall and use our free access point to check email.
  • Consider bringing a coat or sweater with you, as the weather in Albuquerque is projected to be in the 60s during the day, and the 40s in the evening. Also, meeting rooms may vary in temperature.
  • Networking opportunities abound this year, so be sure to plan some time to attend one of many events.
  • Don't miss the special joint NASPAA/APPAM events happening on Wednesday and Thursday during the conference.
  • During the Thursday lunch break, take the opportunity to join one of seven caucuses. These are discussions centered around evolving research topics; participants are encouraged to provide feedback, questions, and discourse. However, participants must provide their own lunch.
  • If you’re a first-time member or attendee to the conference, don’t forget about the special New Member Reception. Join the APPAM Policy Council for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres while getting to know other new members and first time attendees. If you haven’t received an invitation and you’re a first-time attendee or new member, please contact Tristanne Staudt.

And if you’re a participant this year, here are two key things to remember:

  • There are updated guidelines for session chairs, discussants, participants, and posters for this year. APPAM doesn’t supply laptops so if you’re in need of one, you must bring your own or coordinate with other presenters in your panel. Don't forget your power cord! We do have projector connections for PCs and Macs.
  • If you’re presenting and want attendees to have access to handouts, Power Point presentations, or other documents, APPAM can upload them to the conference mobile app for attendees to peruse at their leisure. Email Ben Rome for more information on how to get your materials online.

Free Shuttle

With this being APPAM's largest conference ever, we are supplying a free shuttle between the convention center and the Crowne Plaza Albuquerque, which is next to the Fairfield Inn. Attendees staying in these two hotels are welcome to utilize the shuttle during the following hours:

Wednesday: 11:30 am - 6:30 pm*
Thursday: 7:30 am - 6:30 pm*
Friday: 8:00 am - 10:00 pm
Saturday: 8:00 am - 5:30 pm

*Those attending one of the evening receptions will be returned to the Crowne Plaza via the event bus.

Online Sessions

APPAM is broadcasting two symposia via the Web: Politics and Policy Making, and ACA: One Year Later. Registration is free for both broadcasts. We're also asking for members to choose which sessions to be recorded for later posting on the Association's YouTube channel.

Social Media

Follow the conference conversation online! Visit the conference main page for sessions summaries, links, photos, and more. You can also follow APPAM on Twitter or Facebook, using the #2014APPAM hashtag. If you're at the conference, you can use the mobile app's social media integration to stay connected. And when you visit APPAM Central in the Exhibit Hall, watch the online conversation unfold on our new tweet wall.
