Tips for Translating Your Policy Degree into Academia, Public Service, and Other Scholarly Practices

The lunch workshop at the CA Regional Student Conference coached students on how to best prepare for a career inside, or outside, academia. Career development experts were on hand to explore writing methods, general interviewing tips, and the skills and strategies needed to translate into a successful policy role post-graduation.

Concurrent Symposium: The Report on the Commission on Evidence-Based Policymaking

Started under the Obama presidency with and gaining bi-partisan support, the Commission on Evidence-Based Policymaking was tasked with developing rules, regulations, and processes for gathering and distributing data. Its main goal, as stated by commission member Katherine Abraham, was to make "more and better" evidence that would allow the federal government to make better decisions, with the hope for a future in which "rigorous evidence is used in future decisions."


Concurrent Symposium: The Vital Role of Government Statistics

At this evening’s symposium, moderated by David Johnson from the University of Michigan, five panel members discussed the importance of government data related to decision-making and future policies

The 2017 pre-conference workshop provided researchers an intensive, interactive program for building partnerships between scholars, civic intermediaries and policymakers. Avi Green and Hannah Reuter from the Scholars Strategy Network led six modules focused on legislator perspectives, establishing relationship networks and the various roles of scholars in policymaking.

The Bipartisan Policy Center’s Evidence-Based Policymaking Initiative is designed to continue and expand the work of the U.S. Commission on Evidence-Based Policymaking, which outlined a vision that rigorous evidence can be created efficiently as a routine part of government operations. In turn, this evidence can be used to construct effective policy.


JPAM Announces 2017 Raymond Vernon Memorial Award Winners

The Journal of Policy Analysis and Management (JPAM) is pleased to announce the winners of this year’s Raymond Vernon Memorial Award: Lauren Jones, The Ohio State University, and Nicolas Ziebarth, Cornell University for their paper “U.S. Child Safety Seat Laws: Are They Effective and Who Complies?” The paper was first published in the Summer 2017, Volume 36, issue of JPAM.
