APPAM/ASHEcon Webinar: The Intersection of Opioid Addiction and Evidence-Based Policy

The opioid epidemic in the United States has reached alarming proportions. With over a thousand people dying each week due to opioid related overdoses, many have suggested evidence-based policy as a way to combat the epidemic. Join ASHEcon and APPAM experts on health policy and opioids as they take a deep-dive into the opioid crisis, how to use evidence-based policy to combat it, and what health economists can do to influence policy.


Student Member Spotlight: Kirk Heffelmire

What policy school do you attend and what is your degree program? 

I am a Doctoral Candidate in the public policy program at the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University.

What is your expected graduation date?

I am planning to defend my dissertation in summer 2018.

What are your post-graduation plans?

I am interested in a public service career with a government or nonprofit pursuing quantitative health care research.

What are your policy focus and why?

My research area is public mental health services. My dissertation considers the implementation of evidence-based practices by state mental health authorities. I was drawn to this area since it combines health care economics with federalism and has not received sufficient quantitative attention.

How did you first get involved with APPAM?

I served on the steering committee for the first ever APPAM regional student conference, where I represented the host campus.

Why do you stay active in APPAM?

The Fall research conference and the regional student conferences are great opportunities to hear the latest research and engage with other scholars and practitioners. I have recently joined the Student Advisory Committee and look forward to helping with programming to engage APPAM student members.

What APPAM tools/resources do you use most often?

Access to the APPAM network is great, and I frequently attend the brown bag and other events in the DC area.

Hobbies or fun fact:

I served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Tanzania from 2007-09, where I taught secondary school math in a rural village.
