The 2018 International Conference Was Truly Focused on the Theme and Location

July 31, 2018 09:08 AM

By David Johnson, APPAM President

Nine years ago, I attended a conference at OECD that started the movement for APPAM to host  international Conferences. Just two weeks ago, I attended the 2018 APPAM International Conference in Mexico City – Public Policy for Sustainable Metropolitan Development – that is a result of APPAM’s commitment to international conferences.

The conference was filled with great papers on vulnerable populations, new initiatives in cities, and sustainable development. I even chaired a session on public management and government sustainability. The plenary sessions brought us together to discuss the main theme of Metropolitan Sustainability, with one session on the recent Mexican Presidential election and another with current and former mayors from Mexico and the US. This conference was truly focused on the theme, with almost half of all papers mentioning “city” or “urban” or “metropolitan” in their titles.

It was the perfect time to have a conference with collaborations between US and Mexican researchers; we generated conversations, shared meals and developed ideas. With the help of the LBJ School and ITAM, we look forward to more collaborations in the future, increased Mexican presence at the Fall Research Conference, and more projects that examine public policy for sustainable metropolitan development.

But the most exciting part for me was to watch my son present his research on immigration and the welfare state. And he was also with me at that first conference in Paris. Time flies.

I look forward to the next APPAM International Conference in Barcelona.
