What is the Role Advocacy Should Play in APPAM’s Activities? | APPAM Leadership Blog Series

What is the role advocacy should play in APPAM’s activities? The arguments largely fall into two camps: APPAM shouldn’t engage in advocacy activities because our members get those needs met elsewhere and wading into specific issues is sure to alienate some; APPAM should engage in advocacy activities since members’ research depends on funding and the outcomes impact policy and the policy-making process. APPAM doesn’t advocate or provide information its members could use to advocate. Should we?

Volunteers Still Needed for 2014 Fall Conference

September 29, 2014 10:00 AM

APPAM is looking for a few more student volunteers to assist the Association staff during this year's Fall Research Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Duties would include:

  • Attending various programs, symposia, panels, and other events, and summarizing them in a short article or video for the website.
  • Monitoring, engaging, and participating with the public and membership through social media.
  • Operating/conducting video/audio interviews of member participants.
  • Other duties as needed by Association staff.

The ideal volunteer candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Be a public policy student or a young professional recently graduated (less than 6 months from their graduation date)
  • Have some writing experience. Editing and photography experience is a plus.
  • Possess an outgoing personality and willingness to engage members with respect and courtesy.
  • Social media experience is not required; but you should have a clean/respectable social presence online in order for those skills to be used.

For more detailed information, download and review the Volunteer Guidelines [PDF] for this year's conference. Please send your intent to volunteer to Ben H. Rome by October 5, 2014.

Volunteers will be compensated for their time with free registration to the conference, reimbursement for one or more hotel nights, and access to hotel Wi-Fi. (Hotel reimbursement is conditional based on certain requirements, which are found in the guidelines.) APPAM is unable to provide compensation for travel or incidental charges.
If you have questions about this opportunity or wish to sign up, please contact Ben H. Rome before October 5, 2014.
