The APPAM Presidency
The President-Elect is elected each year at the Annual Business Meeting to be the convener of the next Fall Research conference. In that capacity, the President-Elect is responsible for selecting the conference theme, recruiting the Conference Program Committee, and coordinating the acceptances and rejections of proposals for the conference program. The President-Elect also recruits the symposia session speaker(s). The President-Elect serves on the APPAM Executive Committee and Policy Council
Upon completing the year, the President-Elect subsequently becomes APPAM's President. The President chairs the Executive Committee and the Policy Council, is the senior decision maker for the association and serves as its leading spokesperson and representative. The president also oversees the work of the Executive Director.
The Immediate Past-President of APPAM serves for an additional year on the Executive Committee and Policy Council to provide greater continuity in the leadership of the association.
The APPAM Vice Presidency
APPAM has two vice presidents who serve staggered, two-year terms. The senior vice president is the chair of the Meetings Committee
and the junior Vice President serves on this committee. The committee advises on matters pertaining to changes in the format of the Fall Research Conference, future site selections, and operations for the International Conference and the Spring Conference. This committee also ensures that operations and logistics for the Fall Research Conference are handled properly. Both vice presidents may be called upon to serve in various capacities in the absence of the president or president-elect and both serve on the APPAM Executive Committee and Policy Council. A new junior vice president is elected each year.
The APPAM secretary is responsible for keeping official minutes of the Policy Council meetings. The secretary also represents the association in circumstances requiring official certification of APPAM activities. The secretary is a member of the Executive Committee and the Policy Council. New secretaries are elected every other year and serve a two year term.
The APPAM treasurer is the association's chief financial officer, responsible for monitoring the financial operations of the APPAM office and the executive director. The treasurer makes regular financial reports to the Executive Committee and Policy Council, helps to guide the investment of the Association's financial reserves, and approves all large expenditures of the Association's money. The treasurer is a member of the Executive Committee and the Policy Council. The Treasurer serves a two year term.
Chair of the APPAM Institutional Representatives
The chair of the APPAM Institutional Representatives convenes the two meetings of the institutional representatives every year, and acts on their behalf to implement activities of interest to the institutions. In recent years, the chair has coordinated production of the annual Spring Conference
(often on topics in public policy and management education, diversity, connecting reasearch to policy and social justice). The chair of the institutional representatives is a member of the Executive Committee and the Policy Council. The term is for two years, and the new chair is elected in the Spring.
