To build on that momentum as we celebrate our 40th Annual Fall Research Conference, APPAM introduced the 40 for 40 Fellowship. We are pleased to announce the winners of the 40 for 40 Fellowship!

Using Social Media to Promote Your Research at the DC Regional Student Conference

The lunch workshop introduced graduate scholars to social media’s role in promoting their academic research, and to demonstrate networking and career development opportunities online. Panelists explored general tips on how to overcome fears of having a social media presence, as well as the skills and strategies needed to extrapolate scholarly research for networking and professional opportunities.

Award and Fellowship Nominations Open for the 2018 Fall Research Conference

Nominations for the 2018 awards and fellowships are now open. All recipients will be honored at the 2018 Fall Research Conference. The Equity and Inclusion Fellowship application closes May 25th. Nominations for all the 2018 awards close July 9th. The 40 for 40 Fellowship application closes August 15th.​

Explore Sustainable Development at the APPAM International Conference

Please join us for the 2018 APPAM International Conference in Mexico City on July 19 - 20! The 2018 theme, Public Policy for Sustainable Metropolitan Development, will encompass a great number of topics embodied in the 17 Sustainable Development Goals developed by the United Nations. These include Poverty, Quality Education, Clean Water and Sanitation, Affordable and Clean Energy, Sustainable Cities and Communities, and Climate Action.

Register for the Member Forum: State and Research University Partnerships in the Opioid Crisis

Opioid misuse is a major epidemic across the nation. Local and state officials bear the burden of responses to the epidemic and need assistance coordinating research and resources. This Institutional Forum, held at Duke University's Penn Pavilion, seeks to connect the worlds of research and policy across this escalating public health epidemic, and will be a valuable opportunity for academics, researchers, and policy officials to exchange best practices for research and policy support.

Host the 2018 Public Policy Camp: RFP Process is Open

Public Policy Camp is an initiative to introduce the field of public policy to a group of students who might not otherwise be familiar with it, as well as increase the pipeline of diverse students into APPAM institutional member graduate public policy and public affairs schools. APPAM is requesting proposals from institutional members to host the 2018 event.

The Internal and External Validity of the Regression Discontinuity Design: A Meta-Analysis of 15 Within-Study-Comparisons | JPAM Featured Article

Regression discontinuity (RD) is generally acknowledged as the most rigorous non-experimental method for obtaining internally valid impact estimates. The study tests the efficacy of RD by comparing RD causal estimates at the treatment cutoff to those from Randomized Control Trials also estimated at this same cutoff. The study identifies 15 previously completed within-study-comparisons that explicitly examined this issue by assuming the RCT results are unbiased and comparing them to RD results.

Tips for Translating Your Policy Degree into Academia, Public Service, and Other Scholarly Practices

The lunch workshop at the CA Regional Student Conference coached students on how to best prepare for a career inside, or outside, academia. Career development experts were on hand to explore writing methods, general interviewing tips, and the skills and strategies needed to translate into a successful policy role post-graduation.
