About the APPAM Public Policy Camp

In an effort to increase the pipeline of diverse students into APPAM institutional member graduate public policy and public affairs schools, as well as introduce the field of public policy to a group of students who might not otherwise be familiar with it, APPAM will hold a one-day public policy camp for undergraduate students in Washington, D.C. The programming will be interactive and designed to show promising, underrepresented undergraduates that have shown a proclivity towards policy what a career in the policy world might look like.

The first Public Policy Camp will be held at George Washington University on Friday, September 15th from 9:00am to 5:00pm.

Camp Participation

Five DC-area APPAM Institutional Members have partnered with APPAM to create the inaugural Public Policy Camp, they are: American University, George Mason University, Georgetown University, George Washington University, and University of Maryland, College Park.

Each of the above universities will identify 15 – 20 promising underrepresented undergraduate juniors or seniors to participate in the day-long camp. Underrepresented students are defined as those who are from a racial or ethnic group that is traditionally underrepresented in public policy, including: American Indian/Alaskan, Asian/Pacific Islander, Black/African/American, Hispanic/Latino, Other. The five partnering schools identified will provide their list of students to the APPAM office no later than July 3rd.

The Public Policy Camp will be capped at 100 students to ensure an intimate, collegial feel and allow ample participation by each student.

Underrepresented undergraduate juniors or seniors from non-partnering Institutional Members are encouraged to participate in the Public Policy Camp as space allows. These students will be placed on a wait list on a first come, first served basis. If there are open spots in the program after the five DC area schools submit their list of participating students on July 3rd, students will be taken from the wait list, in order of placement on the list, and placed on the camp roster for participation. We are currently accepting wait list submissions. To place a student on the wait list, please email Tara Sheehan, APPAM Executive Director.

While there is no registration fee to participate, there are no resources available to help defray the costs of transportation to the event.
