The DC Regional Student Conference will be held on April 7th - 8th, 2017 at George Mason University in Arlington, VA. During this conference, students will present research across a wide variety of policy areas, through poster sessions and on conference panels with their peers.

Participating students will gain valuable research presentation experience, as well as receive important feedback from academics, practitioners, and other students. Students will have several opportunities to network and make connections with a diverse group of policy professionals, as well as other policy students.

  • February 28: Registration Opens
  • Mid-March: Registration Deadline for Presenters
  • Late March: Final/updated papers/projects due to panel chairs/discussants
  • March 31: Registration Closes
  • April 7 – 8: DC Regional Student Conference, Arlington, VA

Registration

Registration for the 2017 Regional Student Conference in DC will open on February 28th. The registration rate for all attendees, including student presenters, is $25.00. This fee includes breakfast and lunch each day and a networking reception. 

Schedule at a Glance

Friday, April 7th  

  • 8:00 – 9:00am: Registration and Breakfast
  • 9:00 – 10:30am: Concurrent Sessions (room assignments will be posted in the coming weeks)
  • 10:45 – 12:15pm: Concurrent Sessions
  • 12:15 – 2:00pm: Lunch & Policy Career Paths Workshop
    • The Policy Career Paths Workshop with feature panelists with experience hiring and recruiting recent graduates for policy positions to discuss key attributes employers seek when hiring, CV pointers, interviewing tips, and what the post-graduation job search experience entails.  Panelists from academia and the public and private sectors will describe their professional career path, helpful tips they learned along the way, and what students can do in preparation for the policy career search process.  Attendees are encouraged to attend this “lessons learned” session with experienced professionals.  
  • 2:15 – 3:45pm: Concurrent Sessions
  • 4:00 – 5:30pm: Concurrent Sessions
  • 5:30 – 7:00pm: Networking Reception & Poster Session
    • All attendees are encouraged to attend this reception to connect with their fellow students and make connections with other policy professionals in the DC area over cocktails and hors d'oeuvres.  Attendees will also have the opportunity to view student poster presentations and speak with authors.  

Saturday, April 8th 

  • 8:00 – 8:30am: Registration and Breakfast
  • 8:30 – 10:00am: Concurrent Sessions (room assignments will be posted in the coming weeks)
  • 10:15 – 11:45am: Concurrent Sessions
  • 12:00 – 1:00pm: Presentation Skills Workshop
    • Students are encouraged to attend this workshop, which will describe presentation best practices and how students may grow their presentation skills.  Seasoned APPAM presenters will discuss in detail how to analyze information and communicate findings in effective and engaging ways, how to effectively use visual aids, presentation “must haves,” as well as what to expect as a first-time presenter.  
  • 1:15 – 2:15pm: Poster Luncheon Session
  • 2:30 – 4:00pm: Concurrent Sessions
