A coalition of scientific, statistical, and professional organizations, including APPAM, is urging the U.S. Department of Commerce to restore protections against political interference in federal data and strengthen safeguards for whistleblowers who report concerns about scientific integrity.
The coalition warns that recent changes to the department’s scientific integrity policy could weaken public trust in federal statistics produced by agencies such as the U.S. Census Bureau and the Bureau of Economic Analysis. These data inform public policy, business decisions, and billions of dollars in investments. Without clear protections, federal scientists and statisticians may face greater pressure to alter or influence findings for political reasons.
