Fall Conference Job Interviews

Many employers conduct interviews on an informal basis during the APPAM Fall Research Conference. APPAM helps to facilitate the interviews through special features on its comprehensive career website and, new this year, APPAM is offering Job Interview space for employers who wish to interview potential employees at the Fall Conference.   
For employers and employees, there are special features at PublicServiceCareers.org to help you stand out to potential employers/employees. These features are active now and include the following:
  • People seeking employment may indicate their availability to be interviewed at the Fall Research Conference in their account profile on PublicServiceCareers.org. Their resume listings on the site will include the APPAM logo. 
  • Employers wishing to interview at the conference also may indicate such in the settings for their job listings on the site. Their job listings will include the APPAM logo. 
  • Employers who post at least one job on the site and connect it to the conference interviews may then view resumes and make contact with job seekers at no additional charge. All other employers will have to pay a fee to contact interested job seekers. 
Listed below are additional instructions and tips for job seekers and employers to best make use of this service.

Job Seekers

When setting up a career profile, upload a resume document to the site that includes all publications, conference presentations, and other relevant information. The automatic software on the site will use the resume document to produce a searchable profile. However, you must do the following to complete the profile: 
  1. Make sure you correctly select your highest degree obtained, degree field, and areas of research interest (you may choose up to five areas of interest). 
  2. Decide how you wish to handle the use of information about publications and conference presentations in your profile. The system has been configured to not gather that data from your resume document in order to preserve your anonymity (remember: employers must use the system to seek your permission to get detailed information about you). APPAM recommends you use your resume document (stored on the site or emailed to employers) to share information on publications and conference presentations. Alternatively, you may manually enter or cut/paste that information where indicated into your profile. 
Some employers will enable the feature in their job listings to allow online applications. Job seekers may wish to set up a plain-text resume to use when applying via e-mail. Please note that APPAM offers no assurances that job seekers will be invited for interviews by participating in this process.


A link to the interviews at the APPAM conference may be added to existing jobs listed on the site or included with new jobs. If an employer already has one or more jobs active on the site, it will be necessary to login to the same employer account through which each job was posted. Please note that it is not possible for an employer to indicate availability for interviews through APPAM without having at least one active job on the site. Please also note that the anonymity of job seekers listed on the site is preserved until job seekers grant employers permission to access their complete profile.
If you are interested in interviewing at the Fall Conference, complete this form to reserve space. For a nominal fee, APPAM is offering space at one of the host hotels for you to conduct your interviews. The space will be available on Thursday, November 8th and Friday, November 9th. You do not have to be a member to reserve interview-space at the Fall Conference however; APPAM members do receive reservation space at a reduced rate. 
Employers should note some important new features of searching resumes on PublicServiceCareers.org
  1. Employers may search the profiles of job seekers by areas of research interest, highest degree field (e.g., economics, public policy, etc.), geographic location, and employment sector(s) of interest (e.g., academe, consulting, etc.). These features will not work unless the job seekers configure their online profiles to enable these searches.
  2. Employers will be able to download resumes if job seekers post the files on the website. Once a job seeker has granted an employer permission to access the resume, it then may be downloaded and read/printed. 
  3. Per the instructions to job seekers above, APPAM is encouraging all job seekers to put information on publications and conference presentations only in their resume documents and not in their online profiles. 
  4. Please be sure that any jobs you list on the site contain instructions for job seekers regarding how to apply directly to you for the purpose of arranging interviews at the Fall Research Conference. 
APPAM continues to work closely with the host for the job listing service to upgrade the functions that support Fall Research Conference interviews. Please note that APPAM offers this solely as a helpful service and makes no guarantees that employers will find suitable candidates or that job seekers will be invited to interviews.
