Conference Theme

Policy that Matters: Making Public Services Work for All

Good policy improves lives. Specialization and professional incentives may sometimes make it easy to miss these connections. The 2023 APPAM Fall Research Conference centers our focus on the impact of policy on the daily, lived experience of the public. The theme, Policy that Matters: Making Public Services Work for All, encourages us to consciously and explicitly consider how social science theories and empirical research about policy design and implementation has a direct and practical effect on the lives of people.

Our capacity to make a meaningful difference requires an ongoing willingness to examine how we perform and communicate research. In a time of disinformation and distrust it demands both rigor and relevance, and a willingness to explain to policymakers and the public how credible research matters. But it also requires a questioning of the normative assumptions that guide our research. Who do those assumptions help, and who do they exclude? How do we incrementally adjust or remake our conceptual models to be more inclusive and reflective of people’s actual experience of policy? The #2023APPAM conference provides the space to discuss these questions in Atlanta, Georgia this November 9 – 11.
