There is No Place Like Home... and Dorothy's Ruby Slippers | APPAM Leadership Blog Series

Having spent my childhood in Kansas, I’m all about Dorothy’s ruby slippers. There is in fact no place like home, and I’m proud to call APPAM my professional home for the past three plus decades. This will be APPAM’s 40th research conference—our ruby anniversary. Never has rigorous policy evidence been more important. We must continue to attract and support young professionals to grow and improve our field.

This year we're doing something different. In recent years, APPAM has consistently developed more resources and opportunities for our student and younger professional members. To build on that momentum as we celebrate our 40th Annual Fall Research Conference, APPAM introduces the 40 for 40 Fellowship. This 2018-exclusive program will provide funding for 40 outstanding young research professionals to attend the Fall Conference.

Join us at the DC Regional Student Conference on April 6th - 7th, 2018. Students will present research across a wide variety of policy areas, through poster sessions and on conference panels.

Forty years ago this summer, a group met at Hilton Head to discuss the possibility of an organization that focused on public policy analysis and management. In fact, our first president, Joel Fleishman, said it was at this meeting that the concept of APPAM was born, with a focus “… on the exchange of ideas and research.” And to this day, we still focus on that exchange of ideas.

The Effects of Federal Adoption Incentive Awards for Older Children on Adoptions from U.S. Foster Care | JPAM Featured Article

When children in foster care cannot be reunified with their parents, adoption is considered a better option for permanent placement over long-term foster care. The federal Adoption Incentives program was established in 1997 to provide annual performance bonuses to states for increases in adoptions from U.S. foster care. This paper uses changes to the Adoption Incentives program in 2003 and 2008 to analyze states’ responses to the federal performance bonuses.

The 2018 conference will emphasize the iterative and collaborative nature of building evidence. We aim to engage researchers, policy makers, and program leaders in thoughtful discussions about how best to collect data, capture innovation, measure impacts, and identify actionable and timely recommendations. All submissions are due by April 11, 2018.
