Subsidies Are Not Health Care Reform: The Need for Real Change
Saturday, March 21, 5:00 – 6:15 PM
Room: Beechwood

As the expiration of subsidies for the Affordable Care Act becomes a reality for millions of Americans, the political discussion often oversimplifies the issue. Our panel of experts will discuss why viewing subsidies as a true solution misses the bigger picture. While these subsidies have provided temporary relief, their ongoing presence has allowed important reforms addressing the root cause of cost growth, such as the lack of competition among insurers and providers, to be ignored.

Join our panel of researchers and practitioners as they break down the current state of the subsidy debate and its place in the broader context of healthcare reform. They’ll explain why treating this issue strictly as a political matter limits the potential for solutions that could benefit everyone in the long run, and why we're missing an opportunity to fix the health care system — once and for all.

Moderators: Tony Lo Sasso, Robert F. and Sylvia T. Wagner Professor of Public Affairs in the La Follette School of Public Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison
