The #2023APPAM Fall Research Conference will feature some fantastic sponsors from across the policy research spectrum. Today we're shining a spotlight on the LBJ School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin.
What types of programs does your school offer?
We offer several nationally ranked degrees, including a Master of Public Affairs, Master of Global Policy Studies and a PhD in Public Policy. We offer a unique 15-month DC track option as part of the two master's degrees. We also offer an Executive Master of Public Leadership for nonprofit and public leaders looking to level up their leadership. In addition, our Governor's Center for Management Development up-skills hundreds of public sector workers a year.
How has your school changed in the last ten years?
Over the last 10 years, the LBJ School has become the first stop for public policy leadership in Texas. We have grown in all directions -- enrolling a fall '23 class that is 11 percent larger than the year prior, expanding executive education and soon, we will be launching our first-ever undergraduate degree. We are building a critical pipeline to public service for more people at more stages of life.
We continue to examine our current degree offerings for relevance, recently adding new certificates to boost skills highly sought by employers. Our faculty ranks continue to grow. In fall '23, the LBJ School welcomed nine new faculty members with expertise ranging from data science, immigration, global geopolitics, criminal justice reform and child protection policy.
With the larger University, we have also launched the largest fundraising campaign in our history. The results have included the new Willie Nelson Endowment for Uplifting Rural Communities and the new Patman Center for Civic and Political Engagement to promote civil discourse and leadership. And in 2024-25, we'll celebrate the 10th anniversary of the LBJ Washington Center, which offers students an opportunity to live, study and work in the nation's capital.

Students at the LBJ School work on today's toughest issues in one of the world's most dynamic policy environments. We are the only public policy school tied to a top-tier research university, a presidential library, a state capital and an international border. Through a curriculum that blends theory and practice, students are prepared to make an immediate impact on the world. And we are committed to meeting students where they are at, providing several funding options and flexibility.
If you are hiring, what makes your school a great place to work?
The people! We are a dedicated, close-knit and mission-oriented community.The resources and networks of LBJ and the larger University also create spaces for multi unit collaboration and professional development. The opportunities to learn and engage with some of today's top impact makers are also endless, from public events to classroom lectures. LBJ and UT are places where discovery happens every day.
What is your teaching/research divide?
We don't have a traditional teaching and research divide. Our research faculty teach, mentor and research alongside students.
What advice do you have for prospective students?
Visit the schools you’re interested in attending; meet students, faculty and alumni; and give yourself plenty of time to complete your application. At LBJ, apply by the round one, Dec. 1 deadline for priority fellowship funding.
What is something unqiue about your institution or program?
We are home to not just any presidential legacy. LBJ represents the lasting power of enacting societal change through sound and savvy public policy.
